The Art and Book Sale
It is over. It was fun. The art display
was spectacular. Elaine Ostroot had her generous sized oils on the new
panels Jerry designed and built, and those smoothly neutral panels showed
her work as well as the religious paintings of her friend and
fellow artist, Barbara Bosher, to prime effect. Joyce Lenz's
lovely muted landscapes of the area were set up next to Elaine's, and
beside them, BOOM, the paintings (on canvas, on wood, on furniture) of
Elizabeth Sammons. The boom is facetious, but it sure seems like
only the no-nonsense black lines in Eliz.'s designs keep in check the
amazing color-energy and the dynamism of her designs.
A table of donations from "The Frame" project came
next, and then, and then, breathtaking: the
intricate cloth and thread works of Suzanne Tourtelot. Barbara
Robinson, beside Suzanne, had something to offer every level
of prospective buyer, from her richly textured original
oils for the serious collector, to prints, to notecards, all done, of
course, with Barbara's usual professional flair. Pat
Rogers, next to Barbara, had stacked her watercolors (acrylics,
too, but also done on watercolor paper), in a way that invited
flipping through. Pat pure-out enjoys the whole process of visual
expression, which very possibly accounts for the enjoyment to be found
in flipping through her work, every single page in the stack. And
just when you thought you'd seen it all, came the table of Betty
Johnson. Her Dogs in Masterpieces line! What wit, what skill!
How funny and perspicacious can a person be!
Not only was the art fantastic and
socializing with the artists fun, there were tables unending of books!
And Readers/Writers guild members adding to the social whirl!
Thanks to everyone who helped. Truly
special thanks to the husbands of artists and writers who showed up to
do the heavy work. It was a real community event. Should say Holiday
Island community event!

The place is the ballroom of the HI Clubhouse. This event is co-sponsored by the Art Guild and the Readers/Writers Guild. It is scheduled for Saturday, March 14. This is an opportunity to buy original art by the area’s finest artists at pre-famous artist prices. Also available will be nearly new and used first edition, hardback, and paperback books priced from twenty-five cents to three dollars. At those prices you can read your books while power is knocked out by spring storms and use them for tinder in next winter’s ice storm. Art and books will be sold from 9 AM to 3 PM. Make plans to shop early for the best choices.
Betty Johnson has made it with her dog art! She's just been accepted to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's 22nd. international exhibition entitled Animals in Art. "Queen Corgi" will debut at a reception March 28, 6PM. Needless to say, this is a high honor! Congratulations, Betty!
